Reading Corner
I love to read! I read just about anything and I love to share some of my favourites with others. Here are a few I have read on traveling, cruising, even packing. They are just some favourite travel tales that make great vacation reading. Please keep checking back as this page will be updated each time I finish another book that I think you will enjoy. If you have a favourite travel book that you think I should check out, then please send me an email at helen@have2cruise.com
The Packing Book: Secrets of the Carry-On Traveler by Judith Gilford
I love this book! Who knew you could get so much stuff into a carry-on! There is a whole section on how to find the right carry-on bags and even the right suitcase for when you just have to check a bag. And my favourite part - how to avoid those "just in case I need it" items that we tend to grab and never use.
Going Abroad: How to answer the call of nature anywhere in the world. A must for travelers - whereever they, er, go! by Eva Newman
This little book is full of valuable information about how to recognize the public restrooms, how to use the restrooms...some are a little different to what we are used to, even restroom etiquette - yes, there is a proper way to conduct oneself when using the public facilities! And the most important thing...what to do when there is no toilet paper.
Panama Canl by Cruise Ship: The Complete Guide to Cruising the Panama Canal by Anne Vipond
Everything you wanted to know about the Panama Canal and more. This book contains the history of the Panama Canal and how it was built; ports of call with local attractions and maps; shore excursions; shopping tips for local products; plant and animal life; and many more interesting tidbits about this most amazing area complete with colour photographs.
Queen of the Road: The True Tales of 47 States, 22,000 Miles, 200 Shoes, 2 Cats, 1 Poodle, a Husband and a Bus with a Will of Its Own by Doreen Orion
This book is about taking a self-proclaimed pampered princess out of Long Island in a converted bus and driving around the USA for a year with her husband, cats, dog and shoes. I had some great laughs while reading this book. Oh, and if you are into Martinis the author has some interestingly named Martini recipes at the beginning of each chapter.
Caribbean by Cruise Ship by Anne Vipond
I have read several books on the Caribbean and this one is one of my favorites. It is a very handy guide with a ton of information and a pull-out map of the Caribbean. It covers the history, plant & animal life, what to see and do at different ports of call, and lots of other information that will help you make the most of your time in the Caribbean.
Way Off the Road: Discovering the Peculiar Charms of Small Town America by Bill Geist
If you are ever on a road trip across America and would like a couple of quirky, interesting, or entertaining places to visit, then this book has a few of them. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about small towns; you know the ones that if you blink you will miss them as you drive along. But after reading this I want to keep my eyes open and visit some of these places, just to see if they are real. Have you ever wondered where lost/unclaimed luggage goes? What do you do if your town has a population of 1 and you're the one? How about being a 92-year old paperboy who delivers the paper to the locals by plane? Do you know where the Museum of Dirt is? This book will enlighten and entertain you as you find out about some of the strange and quirky happenings in small town America.
